The attorneys and staff of Decof, Mega & Quinn, P.C. extend their deepest sympathy to the victims, families, students, faculty, and staff affected by the recent mass shooting event at Brown University. Our thoughts are with all those who have been harmed and with a community now grappling with grief, fear, and many unanswered questions.
The shooting that occurred on Saturday, December 13, 2025, at approximately 4:00 took place inside an academic building on Hope Street, less than a mile from Decof, Mega & Quinn’s historic headquarters on Smith Street. While the FBI and police are continuing to conduct their criminal investigations, there are significant questions about the steps that were taken to avoid a tragedy like this from happening in the first place. Issues related to campus access, security clearance, etc. need to be examined alongside the criminal investigation.
For over fifty years, Decof, Mega & Quinn has represented individuals and families in the most serious and sensitive matters, including cases in Rhode Island and across the country involving violent acts, catastrophic injury, and wrongful death. With deep ties to Rhode Island law enforcement that stretch back decades, Decof, Mega & Quinn’s work has consistently focused on uncovering the truth, giving voice to those who have been harmed, and helping families navigate moments of profound loss with dignity and care. Having represented victims of violence and negligence too many times in Rhode Island, Decof, Mega & Quinn are experts in investigating and uncovering the facts – the truth - of what happened and then examining, with transparency, what could have been done to avoid it. Understanding what occurred, and whether steps should have been taken to prevent this tragedy, is a critical component of accountability and to ensuring the safety of students and the public going forward. Partner Mike Quinn “While no legal process can undo the harm, a careful and honest search for the truth is the first important step toward healing and preventing future tragedies. This is a matter of great importance to the families affected, to institutions of higher education across the country, and to the American public. We are ready to devote our whatever resources are necessary to do that,” said Partner Michael P. Quinn, Jr.
Decof, Mega & Quinn remains committed to Rhode Island and to the belief that careful inquiry, accountability, and compassion are essential steps in the aftermath of tragedy.
