Top Tips to Avoid Injury to Children This Halloween

Halloween is a time of fun and excitement for kids and grown-ups alike. With appropriate care and attention, everyone involved can have a good time and end their night safe and sound. Statistics tell us, however, that Halloween presents some special safety risks, especially to children.

For instance, in 2013, Safe Kids Worldwide, a global organization dedicated to preventing injuries in children, published statistics from the CDC showing that, on average, children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween than other days of the year. An October 2011 publication by Safe Kids Worldwide compiled a number of other interesting findings. For example, while the fear of poisoned or tampered treats seems to persist, the actual incidence rate is very small. Conversely, other causes of injury, including falls and dangerous costumes, remain somewhat overlooked. Click here for further information.

None of this should stop participation in trick-or-treating or Halloween parties; such events are long-held American traditions, practiced on a favorite holiday for many people. The key, of course, is to act reasonably and responsibly, whether you are looking out for your own kids or those who may come to your house.
