John S. Foley

John Foley has been representing clients in personal injury litigation at Decof & Decof since 1981. Prior to joining the firm, he was a Special Assistant Attorney General in the Civil Division of the Rhode Island Department of Attorney General. In 1980, he became Chief of the Government Litigation Unit, where he supervised the Attorney General’s representation of the State of Rhode Island and its departments and employees in litigation in the state and federal courts.

In 1994, John’s extensive trial experience at Decof & Decof earned him membership in the Rhode Island Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates. ABOTA is a national organization of trial lawyers whose members must demonstrate a record of extensive trial experience and meet the organization’s high standards for skill and integrity as trial lawyers. John is one of only 28 lawyers in Rhode Island to have achieved this distinction.

John has represented clients in medical malpractice, product liability, vehicle accident, and other personal injury cases in the state and federal trial courts, the Rhode Island Supreme Court, the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court. From 1991 through 1998, he played a leading role in the firm’s representation of the Rhode Island Depositors Economic Protection Corporation in litigation arising out of the State’s credit union crisis. The firm’s representation of DEPCO in negligence cases against credit union directors, accountants, and lawyers resulted in the recovery of over $180,000,000, which allowed DEPCO to retire its taxpayer-funded bond obligations many years earlier than anticipated, saving the taxpayers millions of dollars.

John’s volunteer activities include frequent lectures to attorneys and health care practitioners on topics related to personal injury litigation and trial practice, and yearly participation as a volunteer mediator in the Rhode Island Superior Court’s annual settlement week program.

John attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, graduated from the University of Rhode Island (B.A., 1974), and obtained his law degree from Boston Unversity (J.D. 1977). He is admitted to practice in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. He is a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates, the Rhode Island and American Bar Associations, the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, and the Rhode Island Trial Lawyers Association, where he serves on the board of directors. He has been selected by his peers to be included in "The Best Lawyers in America" since 2006.
