USA Today News Piece on Foreign Bodies Left Inside Patients After Surgery

Patrick C. Barry

USA Today recently reported on the all-too-common occurrence of foreign bodies left inside patients after surgery. Some of these victims lose parts of their intestines; some don’t survive. Hospitalizations involving a lost sponge or instrument carry an average cost of more than $60,000. New sponge-tracking systems, however, typically add just $8 to $12 to an operation’s cost.
